Volunteer Appreciation Celebration

Earlier this month (Friday, 8 September), we held a coffee morning to say thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers and also to reflect on the past ten years as the foodbank approaches its tenth anniversary. There are more anniversary events and activities to come in Autumn, which we will keep you updated on. The tenth anniversary cake in the picture was made by Anita Jamieson – thank you, it was delicious!

Trussell Trust Day of Action

On Saturday 9 September, foodbank volunteers took part in a Day of Action, organised by the Trussell Trust. The team were on Southend High Street, asking members of the public to sign a petition calling on the government to Guarantee Our Essentials. The petition is still open – it would be great if you could add your name.

Match Day Food Collection

Southend Foodbank will be at Southend United for a match-day collection on 23 September. Foodbank volunteers will be outside Roots Hall before the game against AFC Fylde. Please do bring food and toiletries to donate and look out for one of our volunteers to make a financial donation. If you’re not going to the match, you can drop off your donations at the Club Shop or at the Blue Boar or Spread Eagle pubs.

Dates for Supermarket Collections –  a Call for Volunteers

You can donate food or volunteer your time to local supermarket collection events. Upcoming supermarket collection events:

  • 29 to 30 September – Waitrose Southend-on-Sea, Fossetts Way, Eastern Avenue, Southend-on-Sea SS2 4DQ
  • 12 to 13 October – Tesco Southend Extra, Prince Ave, Southend-on-Sea SS0 0JP

These collection events provide a much-needed source of donations. Having friendly, approachable volunteers makes a big difference to the number of donations we get. If you have a couple of hours to give and would like to help out in store, please contact [email protected]

Harvest 2023

Many schools, churches and organisations make food collections and donate to the foodbank at Harvest. These collections come at a time of year when we see increased referrals to the foodbank, as the weather gets colder and household budgets get squeezed. They are so important to us!

Why not hold a special harvest collection in your area or place of work?
