Bank the Food on Radio 2 5/10/21

7th October 2021

Emma Spring from Bank the Food talked to Jeremy Vine on Radio 2. School children at Thorpe Hall School in Southend were inspired by working with Southend Foodbank to design an app which allows people to find out what their nearest foodbank needs when you walk into a supermarket with a foodbank collection point. Emma’s company made that app into a reality, and Bank the Food is now free for everyone to use across the country.

“This came about from school children after working with Southend Foodbank. They realised that actually it was really hard for foodbanks to make what they need known to their donors.”

“It’s a very simple app which joins together the donors with the supermarkets. When a donor goes into a supermarket, the app will ping and it will say Southend Foodbank needs…. But it’s national, we’ve designed it so it can be used right across the UK.”
