Get involved March 2020

2nd March 2020

March events cancelled

This post has been edited to note that the Tesco collection day and Quiz night have been cancelled indefinitely.  Please follow more recent news posts for up-to-date information about how you can get involved to support the foodbank.

There’s always something to help with at the foodbank and this March we’ve got a wide range of events: food collections, fundraising and a day of action. Read on to find something you can do to support your local foodbank.

ACTION DAY Saturday 7th, Belle Vue Baptist Church

Why do we need a foodbank in our community? How does the foodbank work? What is food poverty? How can I help? What can we do to make a difference?

Southend Foodbank is busier than ever. More people are coming to the foodbank, more food is needed, more time and food is being donated and shared. We work to make a difference in the lives of people in our community who are struggling to put food on their table by providing emergency food for people referred to us in crisis. But how can we make a bigger change, to tackle the things that push people into food poverty? And how can the community help the foodbank in difficult times?

Come to the foodbank’s action day and do something: find out more, ask questions and leave with one thing you can do to make a difference.

Actions you can get involved with on the day:

  • National campaigns led by the Trussell Trust to challenge wider causes of food poverty
  • The need for foodbanks and what we’re doing locally
  • Collecting and donating food: what donations do we need? What happens to the food you give?
  • Volunteering from just an hour through to giving regular help
  • Business and organisations supporting the foodbank and corporate social responsibility
  • Fundraising, sponsorship, raffle prizes and making it easier to give
  • Ways to shop online that make donations without spending more
  • Free ways to help the foodbank, clicks of support

Entry and participation is free. If you can, please bring a food donation with you. Drop in anytime between 10am-2pm. Everyone welcome.

More coverage of the day will be posted on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/southendfoodbank/

TESCO COLLECTION DAY Saturday 21st, Tesco Prince Avenue

Foodbank volunteers will be back in the foyer of the big Tesco on Prince Avenue, handing out shopping lists and collecting food donations. Supermarket collection days usually give us a big boost and this one is particularly important to refill the shelves after the winter rush. It also gives us an opportunity to talk to people who might not otherwise know about what we do.

If you’re a shopper, give us a smile on your way in, pick up a shopping list and if you can, please buy one extra item in your shop to donate #EveryCanHelps.

If you have time to volunteer, we need people to sign up for an hour or two between 9am-5pm to help at Tesco, handing out leaflets, letting people know that we’re collecting for the foodbank and making sure people are thanked when they donate food. You don’t need any experience and you’ll be part of a small group, so this is a great way to help out even if you haven’t volunteered before. To sign up, email Cass [email protected] .

QUIZ NIGHT Friday 27th, Hamstel Junior School

Our first fundraiser for 2020 will be a quiz night. We’re planning a relaxed evening: just turn up with friends, bring your own snacks and drinks, pay at the door and enjoy a quiz and raffle.

All funds raisied will go to the foodbank. Raising money is necessary to cover running costs as well as buying food when we run out of essentials.

Quiz Night for Southend Foodbank

  • £5 per person, up to 8 on a table
  • Cash only, bring your own refreshments
  • Tickets at the door
  • Raffle and tombola
  • 7.30pm at Hamstel School, Hamstel Road, Southend SS2 4PQ
